Hello

Can you believe the party season is upon us again? To help you have the most fun possible, we've got some seasonal Hidden Gems for you over on the left.

I want to start by talking about the topic of this month's Audio Insight - belief. This is a fascinating topic because it affects so much of your life. So how did you come to believe the things you do? How does anybody? And how reliable are beliefs? When is a belief 'knowledge' as opposed to 'brainwashing' and how does brainwashing work, exactly?

All these questions and more are answered in this month's complimentary Audio Insight 'How Beliefs Work'

Under hypnosis, some subjects can so completely incorporate the hypnotist's suggestions, they will proceed to act in total disregard of an object that is right in front of them. They fully and completely 'believe' it's not there. Conversely, they can 'believe' an object that isn't there, is fully materially present and act accordingly.

When you dream at night you completely believe in the validity of your dream until you wake up. 'Waking up' of another kind can happen when someone leaves a cult and sees that their former beliefs were 'engineered' rather than freely arrived at from their personal experience and choice. This month's audio insight shows you why you believe what you do, how beliefs can be implanted in people and the exact role of emotion in forming and maintaining beliefs. Useful not just for therapists but for anyone who has ever asked themselves: 'How on earth can they think that!'

But the best way to treat or improve anything is to blend top notch hypnotic technique with sound psychology. Below I want to 'unwrap' three specific November downloads to share insights into the psychology behind them.

All the very best as always,

Downloads Unwrapped - the psychology behind the sessions

Keep Your Cool

Staying cool isn't about wearing the right clothes and listening to the right kind of music, it's about keeping your head, which means controlling your emotions even in times of emergency and crisis. Fear, anger and in fact all the primary emotions are infectious. This is why panic or anger can spread like wild fire among crowds - even among whole societies. Keeping cool means staying master of your own mind during difficult times. The keep a cool head download is here to enable people to remain calm even amidst turmoil so that they can think clearly and act effectively. Strong emotion causes 'emotional hijacking' which means the more hysterical we become, the more the 'thinking brain' (the neo-cortex) shuts down. When we don't keep cool we literally become dumber, regardless of how bright we might normally be. The world needs people who can keep their cool in a crisis. And talking of emotional management.

Enjoy Happier Days

The new happy days session works on the principle that certain triggers in your day will automatically produce certain emotional responses in you. For example, perhaps when you first get out of bed, or set eyes on certain people, or sit down at your desk, you are conditioned to automatically feel certain emotions at these times. Maybe there are automatic 'sinking feeling' times in your day. We are all conditioned in this way (don't worry, you're normal!) but once we are aware of this principle we can begin to change and direct it. Happy days seeks to produce happy associations with everyday moments to produce a happier day over all.

Think Big Thoughts

Mindset is all important, as the famous words of Sydney Smith have it: 'A great deal of talent is lost to the world for want of a little courage. Every day sends to their graves obscure men and women whose timidity prevented them from making a first effort.' Our new think big download addresses exactly this; overcoming timidity, shaping dreams into reality and seeing the bigger picture. If you are going to start something valuable, you might as well see just how far and big it can get. So, this session works on both confidence and vision.

"I used the dental anaesthesia download and it made all the difference."
by Anne Caborn

"Let's face it, I don't like the dentist and the thought of root canal work made me incredibly nervous. But I used the 'Dental Anaesthesia' download and it made all the difference. I don't think I could have done without all pain medication, but I found the whole experience much easier by using the download. It made me calmer and naturally relaxed."

"It was more like I was observing from a distance. Even the dentist was impressed when I managed a smile."

This story came from Anne Caborn who is a marketing consultant based in Brighton, UK
