Tinnitus can be a very frustrating condition to live with. The constant ringing, and other sounds, it causes breeds endless anxiety for the sufferer. And unfortunately, stress worsens the condition, which leads to an unpleasant vicious cycle. But as a 1989 study ⁽¹⁾ found, hypnosis can be effective in treating tinnitus.

The pre-talk explains the connection between anxious thoughts, tinnitus symptoms, and stress. It provides reassurance that hypnosis can have a positive effect on reducing the sounds of tinnitus and perhaps even eliminate symptoms.

An extended induction helps clients focus on their senses, using imagery and progressive relaxation to evoke awareness of sounds, physical feelings, relaxing scenes, and scents. A metaphor is introduced, which recurs later in the session, that prepares the client's unconscious mind to tune out what they don't need to focus on.

The trancework uses a metaphorical story and embedded commands to distance clients from the sound of their tinnitus and help them choose what to focus on. An imaginary exercise allows them to visualize turning down the noise and experiencing the relief of silence.
