Thalassophobia is a persistent, crippling fear of large bodies of water, often with a focus on what lies beneath the surface. Sufferers will often completely avoid cruises, trips to the beach, visits to tropical islands, or any situation where they may be faced with a large body of water. Of course, this can have a powerful impact on their quality of life, preventing them from engaging in new experiences and hampering their social life.

The pre-talk explores some of the ways thalassophobia can present, and sympathizes with how it can interfere with normal life experiences. It then goes on to reassure the client that since phobias are a learned response, it is also possible to learn a new, calmer response. The ocean has been integral to human evolution, and feeling comfortable around water is a normal, natural way of being that can be learned and practiced.

The induction focuses on getting the client to pay attention to the sounds of the words and the spaces between them rather than the complete sentences, creating a sense of distance from the cognitive mind and bringing the subconscious mind to the fore. Gentle, permissive language encourages the client to let go of any need to try and simply let themselves surrender to the natural process of relaxation.

As the induction eases into the trancework, the story of a child growing up and gradually overcoming their fears sets the scene for the client to do the same, with the language seamlessly transitioning from third to first person.

Thalassophobia is painted as a pattern of mental images and associations with water - not a fear of the water itself. Having established this frameshift, the script goes on to assert that this pattern can be changed, and that this change is within the client's control: they can free themselves by reprogramming their subconscious associations while deeply relaxed.

Now the client is guided to access a place of deep relaxation using a countdown, with each step fostering a deeper sense of comfort and expanding perception of all the little details that make this special place so very relaxing. They are then asked to notice a screen some distance away, and to gain even greater distance from that screen by moving outside their body to inhabit their observing self.

Removed now not only from the screen, but also from themselves and their own mental patterns, the client is asked to observe their present self viewing a video of a memory in which their past self experienced that old, phobic response, but fast-forwarding through it to a point afterwards when their past self felt totally calm.

At this point they are guided to glide into the video itself, to inhabit their past self in that state of calm, and then to stay within the video as it is rewinded rapidly right back to the beginning, everything happening in reverse. They are encouraged to notice how strange and yet how calm this experience feels - a sense of complete detachment comes from the innate understanding that reality can never progress in reverse. At this point embedded commands instruct the subconscious mind to let go of those old, unhelpful associations and move on.

Now the client returns to their personal place of calm and the process is repeated, only this time the client is asked to observe the video directly rather than inhabiting their observing self. Yet again the video rewinds, and yet again they are able to watch this happen with calm clarity, recognizing their past self as separate from the person they are today.

Finally, a description of people who are calmly confident around water acts as a template for the client to create a new video of a future self free of thallasophobia, and to view that on a much larger, more vibrant screen. The client is guided to notice what it is about this version of them that shows just how comfortable they are, and then to merge with that person and fully experience their new sense of calm confidence and even enjoyment around water.
