Stop Touching Your Face

Increase your resistance to disease and boost your wellbeing by breaking the habit of touching your face

Stop Touching Your Face

Do you often find yourself touching your face unnecessarily?

Are you worried that it may be increasing your risk of infection?

Studies suggest that people touch their face as often as 16 to 23 times per hour.1 And every time you touch your face, there is the potential for bacteria and viruses to be transferred to the areas around your eyes, nose, and mouth, where they can infect you and cause disease.

Of course, just because you transfer bacteria or viruses to your face doesn't automatically mean you will become unwell. That's what your immune system is for: to detect and fight off these pathogens. But at times of increased risk - when pathogens are present in high numbers, or when a novel pathogen arises - our immune system needs all the help it can get.

Besides, wouldn't it be nice to lighten the load on your immune system and keep yourself feeling healthy and well more of the time? We could all benefit from working towards habits that can support better health and wellbeing both for ourselves and for our families.

How to break the habit of touching your face

Avoiding touching your face is an important and highly effective way of reducing your exposure to potentially harmful pathogens. But unfortunately, it's not as simple as just deciding not to touch your face.

For most of us, frequent face touching is a deeply ingrained habit that occurs without any conscious input, which makes it very difficult to change the behaviour through willpower alone.

So how can you break a habit you never even think about?

On a conscious level, you can reduce how often you touch your face by increasing your awareness of your hands. One way to do this is by using a scented moisturiser or wearing new jewellery - anything that makes you pause and take notice of your hands. In meetings or social situations, clasping your hands or holding something can help prevent you from touching your face.

Of course, regular hand washing is also critically important. The more often you wash your hands, the fewer pathogens they will carry, and the lower the chances of infection when you do touch your face.

However, none of these short-term fixes are likely to help you kick that habit permanently.

Touching your face is a subconscious habit, so it's almost impossible to break using conscious strategies. That's why hypnosis is such a valuable tool: it works directly with your subconscious to acknowledge your habit of touching your face and redirect it towards new, healthier habits.
