Fear of Belly Buttons

Does the sight of a belly button send you into a panic?

Do you wish you could think about this part of the body without breaking out in a sweat?

The fact that you're reading this means you probably know from experience that living with a phobia of a perfectly natural body part can be quite debilitating. Experiences that should be exciting and fun, like going to the beach or to the pool in summer, can instead bring on a sense of intense anxiety or dread. That's to say nothing of the impact it can have in certain romantic situations!

Some people with omphalophobia can't even stomach the sight of their own belly button, and will go to great lengths to avoid seeing it by wearing a shirt whenever possible, even in the shower.

Fear of belly buttons, or omphalophobia, might seem like a bizarre phobia, but it's actually not as uncommon as you might think. Like all phobias, it's usually completely irrational - but of course, that doesn't stop your heart rate from climbing and sweat starting to bead on your forehead at the sight of one!

So where does the phobia come from?

Phobias occur when the brain makes what we call a faulty "pattern match" between an object or situation and a certain emotion. Some past experience, perhaps coupled with a genetic predisposition, has caused the brain to form an enduring link between belly buttons and the feeling of fear. Now, whenever you see or think of belly buttons, it acts as a kind of trigger for your brain to automatically elicit the feeling of fear.

Whenever we experience an intense emotion such as fear, our attention is narrowed and we go into a kind of trance. This is what happened when your brain first made the pattern match - your conscious attention was limited, and your brain sought to make sense of the situation on an unconscious level by making that faulty link.

This is why hypnosis is the best kind of therapy for phobias - because it too works on an unconscious level. While you are deep in trance, we can work with your unconscious mind to undo the faulty pattern match and replace it with a helpful, adaptive response - in this case, one of feeling calm and at ease in the presence of belly buttons.

How hypnosis can help

Fear of Belly Buttons is an audio hypnosis session that will reprogram the fearful association your brain makes with belly buttons.

As you relax and listen repeatedly to your session, you'll notice that you:

  • Feel calm and at ease when you think about belly buttons
  • Can see and touch belly buttons without that old reaction being triggered
  • Can fully enjoy activities such as going to the beach and swimming
  • Are more confident and relaxed in general.
