The induction begins by calmly reassuring the client that they can allow their inner mind to begin to relax "instinctively and unconsciously," without any effort. They are asked to tune into how that relaxation feels in their hands and then their feet. Here the words "left" and "right" are used in unexpected contexts to create momentary confusion, thus deepening the growing dissociation between the conscious and subconscious minds.
The client is encouraged to experience a sense of distance from any thoughts that may enter their mind as they connect with their intention and feel the mind starting to quiet down. This is painted as a process not of learning but of rediscovery, since their body and mind already "instinctively know how to do this."
Now the client is asked to immerse themselves in memories of times when they were completely absorbed in the moment. The examples of listening intently to the lyrics of a song and playing hide and seek are universal and easily accessible, immediately proving to the client that they are indeed capable of living totally in the present. They reconnect with how it feels to "experience a beautiful sense of quietness within."
A metaphorical scenario of strolling "further and further" from the busy roads of civilization, until the cars are no longer visible or audible at all, forms the perfect metaphor for finding distance from one's thoughts. As the client finds themselves "surrounded by nature on all sides," a description of the cool breeze and warm sunlight on their face helps them become fully immersed in this perfectly quiet place.
Now the pace slows as the client is given plenty of time to really "absorb this quiet" and enjoy their peaceful surroundings. The suggestion is made that the client can learn to experience this inner quiet whenever and wherever they need to.
Next the client is given the opportunity to float outside themselves and observe the relaxation and stillness of their body. Again slow sentences punctuated by long pauses give the client time to really appreciate the deep sense of quiet imbuing every part of them. Finally they are encouraged to float back inside their body and experience this for themselves, breathing the sound "shhhhhhh" as they do.
The description of a lake, able to reflect reality clearly only when it is completely still, is now presented as a clear metaphor for the mind. The client is shown that even if a thought disrupts that perfect, clear surface, they can simply calmly observe it and give it time to dissolve.
The client is asked now to imagine the many benefits they will gain from being able to tap into a state of quiet calm whenever they choose - the intuition, insight, appreciation, and connection that are simply not possible when the mind is full of busy chatter. This transitions into a gentle description of "this pure beingness," giving the client a chance to connect with these benefits in their own way.
Finally, the client is encouraged to watch their future self quieting their mind, and to see "the tension and mental chatter melt away" as they do. They are asked to notice the changes in themselves as a result of this new way of being - how much more vibrant, focused, and calm they are. As they merge into this future self, they again hear the sound "shhhhhh," creating an anchor for them to use to instil this sense of calm whenever they need.
