Personal presence is that indefinable quality that gives a person gravitas and depth, that makes people pay attention. Though many think of it as a quality that you either have or you don't, personal presence can certainly be developed.

The pre-talk explores what it means to have personal presence and the different ways it can manifest for different people. The client is encouraged to understand that, more than anything, personal presence is about being natural, authentic, and congruent in the way they behave and communicate. When they are confident and true to themselves, the gravitas and depth they seek will naturally follow.

As the induction begins, the client is guided to focus on their breath and to recognize how the breath naturally engenders a feeling of release and relief. Now a sense of support is created as the client is encouraged to notice the solid earth beneath them and the soothing sound of the words surrounding them.

The analogy of a pebble gliding slowly through water helps the client begin to effortlessly drift deeper into trance. As a countdown progresses from five down to one, the pebble descends deeper and deeper before finally coming to rest in the quiet, still, crystal-clear water.

In preparation for the trancework, the script now explores the way the unconscious mind operates when we dream, helping the client to realize that their mind naturally knows how to enter a state of trance and therefore to become more open to unconscious learning.

Now an exploration of the "natural, unselfconscious presence" that children radiate develops the idea that we all have the capacity for personal presence, and that all it really takes is to "be fully in the moment." The metaphor of a tall, solid mountain helps the client to realize just how solid their own foundations are, how their many experiences combine to give them a deep, powerful, "timeless presence."

The story of an utterly focused athlete creates a sense of what it's like to "become like a single unified force." Only when the client has developed this sense of deep focus are they encouraged to recognize this same capacity within themselves. Now the idea is expanded to show that this ability to focus, engage, and connect is a big part of what it means to have personal presence in all sorts of contexts.

A slow string of embedded commands helps the client internalize the attitudes and behaviors associated with personal presence and start to notice the change in themselves, so that expressing their presence becomes natural and effortless. This change is presented not as something new, but as a return to the client's true self.

Future pacing allows the client to see themselves living this new reality: expressing themselves congruently, feeling more relaxed, approaching challenges with confidence, and noticing how others listen and respond to them more fully. Finally, they are given permission to merge with this future self and truly experience how it will feel when this sense of personal presence has become a fully integrated part of who they are.
