Help clients embrace challenge with the Overcome Fear of Discomfort Hypnosis Script
Guide clients to reconnect with the primal need to challenge and stretch themselves
It's only natural to seek out comfort. But when we take this to the extreme, staying within our comfort zone all the time, we can end up compromising both our physical and our mental health.
The Overcome Fear of Discomfort Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help clients find a healthy balance between comfort and challenge.
The pre-talk contrasts opposite ends of a spectrum - the person who exercises to exhaustion and ends up burning out, and the person who spends all day on the sofa watching TV. It asserts that we all need to find a balance between these two extremes, and in doing so to enhance our enjoyment of both the challenges and the moments of repose. Only by embracing challenge can we develop and grow, and this is exactly what the session promises to help the client do.
The client is asked to narrow their focus to a single spot in their surroundings and to acknowledge the change they wish to make in themselves. Embedded commands provide guidance here, encouraging them to "trust in [their] body's capacity to handle challenges" and to choose to "update and enrich" their sense of self as they feel a strength and determination flowing through the body. Even after closing their eyes, they are encouraged to maintain that powerful focus.
Now a countdown guides the client to relax deeper and deeper, drawing their awareness to the sensation of release in the face and the shoulders. Double entendres create confusion, helping the client to dissociate further from conscious awareness.
Now the trancework begins as the client is gently pushed to acknowledge the areas of their life where they already know they would like to more deeply trust in their "capacity to handle challenges" and "thrive from discomfort." They are encouraged to get a sense of the genuine pleasure and enjoyment that comes from "just the right dose of adversity." The need for challenge is acknowledged as a primal human need, and the client is directed to feel this urge intensifying within them.
The client is now taken back into history to imagine how exhilarated, how "fully alive" their ancestors must have felt running through a forest as rain bucketed down and wind whipped across their faces. They are supported to recognize that the body has an inbuilt longing to experience such exertion, just as it longs to feel the accomplishment that comes with learning new skills. Again, they are instructed to reconnect with that urge for challenge.
Now the script relates an anecdote about a "friend" who always believed he needed to snack frequently to avoid the mental fog and irritability that came with hunger but ultimately discovered that not only could he tune out the discomfort in order to fast for long periods, he could actually overcome the need itself and develop a new, healthier attitude to food.
The client is now guided to recognize the lesson from this anecdote: that just because a certain pattern of behavior is comfortable and familiar doesn't make it the best pattern, and also that discomfort is temporary. By pushing through this "dose of deliberately induced adversity" we can ultimately find comfort and familiarity in a new, healthier pattern - and gain feelings of accomplishment, mastery, and satisfaction in the process.
The fact that the "friend" was not forced but chose to go down a challenging path is highlighted as the factor that "made the difference." So too the client is pushed to choose to try something new, with focus and determination. They are encouraged to "feel this determination in the forearms," to experience a kind of physicality to this stronger, braver attitude.
Finally, the client is asked to "get a sense of a future you" feeling this strength, choosing to do something challenging, and finding real enjoyment, accomplishment, and purpose in that. They are assured once again that this "core inner drive" has always been there, and that overcoming fear of discomfort is simply a matter of activating that drive.
