Stop Taking Yourself Too Seriously
Loosen up a little with the help of hypnosis
Have people told you that you take yourself too seriously?
Do you find yourself always trying to have the last word, or make others agree with you?
There's no denying that life is a serious business. There are plenty of big, important issues that need to be addressed, in public and in private life.
There's the state of the world, the impact of new technology, political struggles, personal and political misbehavior. There's all that food we overeat and terrible inequality. And that's just a very tiny selection of what there is to worry about.
So taking things seriously isn't silly or stupid. There really are things that need your careful, respectful attention. There are things you need to discuss in depth and detail with others, so you can work out how to deal with them. There are things that are definitely 'no laughing matter'.
The hidden dangers of over seriousness
But there is a hidden risk in taking everything terribly earnestly, all the time.
This risk has nothing to do with the specifics of whatever it is you are concerned about at any time. It is all to do with the effect on you of unremitting seriousness. You see, when we block out all lightness and humor (even out of respect), we inflate our own self-importance. We don't mean to do this - it happens quite unconsciously.
This is what happens. As we focus more and more 'seriously' on something, we start to get irritated or distressed when other people don't respond in the same way.
Very quickly we come to feel inside that we are 'better' than them, because we are giving this matter the right level of attention, and they aren't. And then we begin to feel that they ought to respect our attitude, because it's obviously superior.
Well, you can see that this is likely to lead to all kinds of trouble, because if there's one thing we are all guaranteed to get riled about, it's somebody acting superior.
And that's not all!
Seriousness and creativity - not great partners
There's another hidden risk. If you do have tricky, complex problems to solve, you really need to be able to think creatively and flexibly and 'out of the box'. And research has shown that laughter and creativity are closely linked.
People who can laugh at themselves and see the lighter side of life can also come up with more new and different ideas. Unremitting seriousness can actually hold you back.
Now of course none of this means that you shouldn't take anything seriously. You'd run into a whole load of other problems if you went to the opposite extreme and became ultra frivolous and jokey about everything.
What it means is that there are great benefits to be had if you can find a better balance between seriousness and lightheartedness.
And how might you do that?
