Use the Stop Trying Impress People Script to Develop Your Clients' Inner Confidence

Help clients improve their social lives and build better relationships

Many people feel inadequate when it comes to how successful, smart, or creative they are. To compensate for this perceived failure, some people try extra hard to impress others by name-dropping, exaggerating their wealth, or being extra performative.

When people act this way, it has the opposite of the desired effect. Instead of attracting new friends, it pushes acquaintances away.

The Stop Trying to Impress People Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was created to help people become more comfortable showing their true self to others.

The pre-talk is aimed at helping the client feel comfortable with their desire to impress others, explaining that this desire can be natural and healthy. In the same way that peacocks display plumage to advertise themselves to potential mates, people share a natural instinct to publicly take pride in certain accomplishments.

While people have different tastes and ideas of what constitutes "too much," there is nothing inherently wrong with confidently displaying something that brings you joy. But problems can arise when the natural desire to display wealth, accomplishment, or intelligence is so overactive that a person's self-worth becomes tied to others' perceptions.

The client is reassured that this session can help them become more comfortable and secure with who they are, so that life becomes less about "seeming" and more about "being." As a result, they will find more fulfilling and enjoyable ways to experience their friendships and encounters with others and the need to prove their worth to others will dissipate.

A classic induction prepares the client to accept hypnotic suggestions. Through embedded commands, the client is relaxed into a state of "focused absorption" and guided to relax every part of the body.

As the client descends deeper into trance, they are encouraged to feel what would happen if the "part of [them] that wants to impress others" were sated - how they "could breathe a deep sigh of relief" knowing they no longer needed to seek that approval.

The client is now guided to imagine themselves discovering a beautiful place where they are free from all pressure to "seem" and can simply "be." This sanctuary has an aura of "deep acceptance," fully ensconcing them in comfort and a sense of home.

Now, the client is led to recall times and places where they have encountered this feeling and experienced the "freedom to simply be who you are." They are guided to use that experience to deepen their current sense of "beingness" and get a sense of their "true presence," which allows them to listen deeply, connect, and express themselves naturally.

The client is presented with two stories, each involving a person who discovered that by letting go of the need to impress others - an audience of classmates in one case, parents in the other - they were able to become more interesting and fulfilled. In each case, the lead characters were liberated by letting go of their need to seem impressive and embracing the act of "just being."

The client is guided to the understanding that being fully present and casting aside ideas of what others may think puts other people more at ease and "imbue[s] the entire situation" with an effortless, true presence that is warm and welcoming to others.

Embedded commands guide the client to integrate this understanding into the "very depths" of their being, so that when they are asked to imagine and embody a "future you," they can discover that "this effortless beingness" has always been a part of them. Future pacing allows the client to step forward in time and notice how distant that "old, out-of-date" desire to impress others now feels.
