Having Difficult Conversations Hypnosis Script
Help your client communicate calmly, clearly, and confidently in those hard conversations
Whether it's breaking up with someone, bringing up poor work performance, or breaking some very bad news, telling someone something you know they won't want to hear can be very hard to do.
The Having Difficult Conversations Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help clients find the calm resolve to say what needs to be said.
The pre-talk sympathizes with how hard it can be to have discussions that you know may upset someone and reassures the client that this session will give them more confidence in tackling these kinds of situations. It describes three ways the session will help: by connecting them to a deep resolve; encouraging a calm, confident approach; and helping them communicate clearly and effectively.
The induction engages the client in slow, deep breathing and suggests that on each out-breath they can gradually let go "more and more deeply." It encourages them to hone in on various aspects of how that feels, helping them dissociate from conscious thought and effort. It is acknowledged that thoughts may arise, and that's okay, because the unconscious will be taking in these words outside of that conscious level of thought.
The client is invited to notice their thoughts fading to make way for space and clarity, like ripples fading on the surface of a lake until it becomes perfectly still, reflecting reality without distortion. They are given permission to feel whatever they feel and simply let themselves be.
Here we make an easy transition into the trancework with the suggestion that letting yourself be fully at ease can include choosing "to use this time well" and "make a positive change in yourself." The client's resistance to difficult conversations is painted as an "old habit" that can be outgrown, just like shoes from childhood.
The client is encouraged to recognize ways they have already become more confident and calm than they once were, to recognize certain tasks or situations where "you just know what to do." This is juxtaposed against a description of people who have become adept at handling difficult conversations through their breadth of experience, implying that skill in tackling difficult discussions is not an inherent trait but something that can be learned.
The client is now eased into a countdown in which they are asked to visualize each number in a different color. It is suggested that at one, they can find themselves in "a different space," ready to "make a deep, lasting, positive change within [themselves]." Short phrases punctuated by pauses create a gentle rhythm and guide the client into ever deeper relaxation as they visualize each number in turn.
As the countdown passes zero, the client is transported to an ancient castle with "thick, solid, immovable ... walls" that simply cannot be penetrated. This is a metaphor for the "iron-clad core" at the centre of the client, a firm resolve to do what needs to be done and say what needs to be said.
Now the client is asked to step back and observe themselves communicating confidently and masterfully. With the comfort of this sense of distance, they are guided to let "the old trepidation dissolve away" so that they can feel completely calm as they recognize just how straightforward these discussions can be and experience the relief of having it over and done with.
The client is now asked to rewind back to before the discussion so that this time they can float even further away, and observe themselves even more calmly, clearly, and confidently. With this enhanced calm and relaxation, they are ready to connect with their intuition in order to recognize what drives the other person, what they respond to, the tone and body language that will best help them take on board what is being said.
The client is directed to experience the reality of calmly having that difficult conversation, speaking clearly and confidently because they sense "this iron-clad, immovable centre" within them. Finally, they are asked to get a sense of the many ways that this "calm self-mastery" will be useful for them in both their professional and personal lives.
