The pre-talk demonstrates the difference between sarcasm and irony, defining sarcasm as "essentially weaponized irony" with a bitter, attacking quality rather than an irreverent playfulness. It explores some of the reasons why people may develop this pattern of behavior, and some of the painful consequences. Finally, it reassures the client that this session will help them develop new, healthier ways of expressing themselves.

The induction begins by asking the client to relax and rest in their own way, simply allowing themselves to "let go." They are reassured that there is no need to try, as the body knows how to drift off in this way, letting the subconscious take over just as it does when they go to sleep at night. The habit of sarcasm is likened to an old pair of shoes that no longer fit, then the capabilities of the subconscious mind to update itself and integrate learnings are highlighted, paving the way for subconscious change.

Now the script returns to its emphasis on relaxation, with embedded commands to "smooth out" both the muscles and the breathing. Calm ocean imagery deepens the sense of stillness and rest. Confusing double-entendres of the words "left" and "right" increase the client's dissociation from conscious processing. The client is reassured that it's okay to experience this in different ways, whether that's a "comfortable heaviness" or a "floating lightness."

These different kinds of experience are shown to mirror the unique nature of the client's mind, so that by relaxing in this way they can find that "everything becomes… more straightforward... in a way that works just right for you."

A description of various antisocial behaviors leads into an examination of why people engage in such activities, helping the client explore and examine their own motivations without directly instructing them to do so. However, they are led to see that such behavior "never really allows them to experience what they want." The analogy of eating a menu with pictures of food rather than actual food shows the futility of such behaviors.

Further examples - of a person who used to deal with their grievances in an immature way but later woke up to "what an adult would do," and of a woman who was very sarcastic in her childhood but years later had transitioned to a completely different, more positive way of operating - prove to the client that change is indeed possible. A string of embedded commands then encourages the client to do just that - to "grow out of that phase" and "relax into [themselves]... as an adult."

The client is now asked to remember a time when their sarcasm had a negative effect on someone, but that pattern of sarcasm is painted as being firmly in the past. They are now guided to drift outside and far away from that time, so that they can observe themselves calmly "from a new perspective."

From this distant, objective perspective, they are guided to recognize how that sarcasm may have been used as a defence mechanism, or that their past self may not have known how to express themselves in a mature way. They are encouraged to view that past self with compassion, and to relax with knowing that many people go through a similar "phase."

Now we move back to the present as embedded commands repeatedly direct the client to "be straightforward and open" and to accept themselves for who they are. Finally, we progress forward to the future, so that the client can experience the ease and self-assurance that comes with consistently expressing themselves honestly and directly.
