Help Your Client Reclaim Control with the Change Addictive Personality Hypnosis Script

Support your client to separate their addiction from who they are, and start to develop new, healthier habits

An 'addictive personality' has traditionally been touted as a pervasive, persistent fault at the core of who a person is, but the reality is that addiction is a learned behavior pattern that can be changed and overcome.

The Change Addictive Personality Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help clients separate themselves from their addiction, and meet their needs in healthier ways.

The pre-talk covers the traditional Alcoholics Anonymous program, presenting it as just one idea as to how addiction can be overcome, and one that simply won't be effective for a large proportion of people. It reassures the client that addictive behavior patterns are not an intrinsic part of who they are, but rather a habitual pattern that can be changed.

The induction begins by guiding the client to focus intensely on a particular point, make their hands into fists, and hold their breath, before allowing all that tension to "release completely." It is suggested that as they direct their energy in this way they can connect with "the importance of making ... change." Immediately they are directed to recall how it felt to build and release this intense focus, allowing the relaxation to deepen.

Now the client is asked to drift outside themselves to observe themselves relaxing even further with every breath. There is no sense of pressure at all as they are guided to simply consider "what it would be like" to see themselves relax "twice as deep," before merging back into themselves, where they can now "make changes at the unconscious level" from "a different state of consciousness."

Now the trancework commences with reassurance that the body already has everything it needs to feel excitement, pleasure, and euphoria, as well as "profound peace and rest" as "an effortless way of being." As evidence, the client is encouraged to recall times in their life when they were totally themselves, completely free of "any old addictive patterns," or "completely absorbed" in something that brought out the best in them. The framing of addictive behavior as an old, outdated pattern sets the scene for the client to let it go.

As the client relaxes into these memories, they are guided to connect their pleasurable feelings with their experience of trance, moving ever deeper. Now they are prompted to consider "who [they] naturally are" outside of their addictive patterns, and how they would have channelled their unique skills, strengths, and focus had they been born at a different time in history. In this alternative setting, it is easier for the client to acknowledge their strengths, so that they can then consider how their valuable "inner blueprint" can be "channelled into the present" in a way that allows them to thrive.

The story of heroin-addicted soldiers returning from Vietnam provides proof that addiction can be overcome when people's primal human needs are being met in healthy ways. However, it also indirectly suggests that this can only be done with a measure of willpower and dedication, acknowledging that even world-class performers have to work at both their strengths and their weaknesses in order to be successful.

Here the script transitions into the story of "the hero of an ancient Greek myth" who is drawn off course in their quest by being "trapped in a house where the food was drugged." This scenario is explored, recognizing that addiction can be easy to fall into and is not the fault of the victim. Ultimately, however, the hero prevails, reconnecting with their strength and resolve and fighting back "to protect the sanctity" of body and mind and "escape for good."

Finally, the client is asked to "get a sense of a future you" meeting their needs, channelling their strengths, and feeling a sense of control over their circumstances. They are guided to notice who they are now that they are free of addiction, and then to merge into this future reality to experience it "from the inside." They encouraged, however, to remember their journey to get to that point, taking pride in having overcome the challenges along the way.
