You may wish to begin by closing your eyes, knowing that in the early stages of sleep, a person remains conscious. It's possible to be half-asleep and still aware of these words, just as you may be half-asleep and aware of your head resting on the pillow.
Throughout the natural world and history, it has been perfectly normal for people and animals to have periods of wakefulness during the night. We instinctively transition through deeper and lighter phases of sleep each night. At times, we glide near the surface of consciousness, finishing a dream cycle. At other times, we dive deeply into the restorative depths of slow-wave sleep.
In fact, during medieval times, there are records of people experiencing a "first sleep" and waking for a period before their "second sleep." During this time, they might visit neighbors, chat, or relax before returning home to sleep again. The idea that we must achieve 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is a relatively modern and somewhat artificial concept.
Enjoying good quality sleep is undoubtedly healthy and restorative.
