How to Develop a More Flexible Attitude
See beyond assumptions and preconceptions and think more deeply with the help of hypnosis
Do you have a flexible attitude?
Railway lines and tramlines are useful things. You always know where you are with them. When everything is going smoothly, they get you from A to B without a hitch.
But when there is something more than a twig on the track, you can get really stuck. If you run your life on predetermined tramlines, you may feel 'in control' and 'safe' - but inflexibility actually puts you at considerable risk.
The dangers of inflexibility
You may like to think of yourself as a person who 'knows their own mind'. You don't shilly-shally or 'sit on the fence'. This can be an admirable trait - unless it prevents you from changing your mind when the circumstances warrant it.
If you can't easily adapt to a new state of affairs because it would mean abandoning a previously held view - and possibly appearing 'inconsistent' - those circumstances may crush you.
Flexibility gives you the option to be inflexible when you choose
Of course, you may have reason to refuse to accept a particular viewpoint, and you are always at liberty to do so. If your decisions are based on the actual merits of the case, that's fair enough, and you would be prepared to face any consequences.
The problem of inflexibility arises when decisions are based not on the merits of the case but purely on the need to maintain a certain self-image, or to hold on to pre-conceptions.
A flexible attitude prevents assumptions clouding your judgment
Preconceptions have been shown to have a measurable effect even on simple and uncontroversial decisions like identifying the object in a blurred picture.(1) How much more will they affect the decisions that really matter to us?
It is probably not realistic to think we can shed all preconceptions (and it would be pretty difficult to do so). But even learning how to escape from the grip of some assumptions can make you more flexible and adaptable - and therefore in a position to make more solidly grounded choices.
But how do you go about becoming more flexible?

Being inflexible makes us much more vulnerable to the unexpected and limits our ability to adapt to changing circumstances. In contrast, being flexible allows us to maintain a younger, clearer mindset-free from the rigidities of habit and ingrained training.
A famous psychology experiment from the 1960s illustrates this point. Two groups of participants were shown an out-of-focus image of an object. As the image gradually came into focus, they were asked to identify what they thought it was. The first group's image came into focus quickly, and they identified it as a fire hydrant even before it was fully clear.
The second group, however, saw the image come into focus very slowly. Along the way, they made several incorrect guesses. Even when the image became clear, they took much longer to correctly identify it as a fire hydrant.
Why did this happen? The second group, while observing the blurry image, formed numerous preconceptions about what it might be. These preconceptions misled them and slowed their ability to perceive the object accurately. In contrast, the first group, unburdened by preconceptions, reached the correct conclusion more quickly.
This shows how rigid preconceptions and fixed ideas can mislead us and slow our thinking. Sometimes, our inflexibility stems from a misplaced sense of self-worth. If our self-esteem depends on being "right," we may find it difficult to change our minds once we've formed a theory. Changing our mind can feel like admitting we were wrong, but clinging to rigid ideas can become a dangerous trap.
Acquiring mental and emotional flexibility is much like developing physical flexibility. People who neglect to stretch or exercise are more prone to injuries, and those who are mentally inflexible are more prone to errors of judgment that can cost time, money, and relationships.
This session is about learning to relax with uncertainty-being comfortable with not having all the answers and resisting the need for a fixed, definitive opinion. Developing this rare capacity to admit you don't yet know makes you truly flexible. This isn't the same as permanently sitting on the fence; rather, it's about being practical and avoiding premature conclusions. It's about staying open to new information and adjusting your views accordingly.
Through this session, you'll learn to view your life, work, interests, and relationships from fresh perspectives. You'll discover how to introduce novelty and freshness into your daily routine. Living the same unchanging routine every day leads to stagnation, while deliberately introducing variety stimulates the mind, encourages learning, and enhances flexibility.
