The word confidence comes from the Latin word fidelis, which means "to trust fully." So, having self-confidence simply means trusting yourself fully.
But this doesn't mean you have to thrust out your chest, jut out your chin, or develop a bone-crushing handshake. Nor does it mean you have to be completely certain that everything will always go your way.
While an anxious person craves certainty and constantly asks themselves, What if this happens? What if that happens?, a confident person doesn't need total certainty. In fact, confidence allows you to relax with uncertainty. After all, nobody can know for sure how a date, a job interview, or any event will turn out. But when you're confident in yourself, you trust that you'll handle whatever happens. Because of that trust, you're better able to relax and perform well when it matters.
For example, if I'm going to a party, I could worry beforehand about what I'll say, whether people will like me, or whether I'll enjoy myself. But that kind of worry is self-defeating because the more I worry, the lower my confidence sinks. Instead of worrying, I trust that I'll respond spontaneously to the social situation as it unfolds.
This type of confidence can be described as trusting in your unconscious mind. Just as I know my eyes will automatically blink if dust blows into them or that my stomach can digest food without conscious effort, I also know that my unconscious mind stores a wealth of learning and instincts. These allow me to ride a bike, drive a car, or perform countless other tasks without thinking about them.
The same is true for you. There are thousands of moments in your life where you've instinctively trusted yourself without even noticing it-whether it's brushing your teeth, sipping a drink, or chatting with an old friend. These are times when you just get on with what you're doing, without overthinking.
The strange thing about confidence is that when you're truly confident, you don't think about confidence at all. In fact, when you're feeling and behaving confidently, you don't think about yourself at all. When you trust yourself, you simply focus on the task at hand, and it feels like no big deal.
It might surprise you to know that many people who know you already think of you as relatively confident.
A 2010 study involving participants from four different countries asked people to fill out a personality questionnaire about themselves. Then, a close friend of each participant completed the same questionnaire about them. The study found that, time and time again, people tended to rate themselves as less assertive and confident than their friends did. Regardless of country, friends often saw participants as more assertive and confident than they saw themselves.
So, chances are, many people already perceive you as confident.

Just as a salmon instinctively swims upstream without questioning the process, you too can find a state of flow-unconsciously trusting that you'll handle whatever comes your way.
