Help recover fluency of speech with the Stroke Speech Recovery Hypnosis Script
Help clients practice the skill of fluent speech with calm, focused determination
Expressive aphasia, or difficulty finding the right words to express what you want to say, is a common problem following a stroke. Fortunately, the brain has an amazing ability to rewire and recover lost skills, especially with dedicated practice.
The Stroke Speech Recovery Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help clients hypnotically practice fluent speech and be patient with themselves as their brain gradually forms new connections.
The pre-talk explains what expressive aphasia is and sympathizes with the experience of being unable to put into words what you want to say. It reassures the client that the brain has a remarkable ability to recover from damage but emphasizes that practice is a key part of this process. Finally, it reassures the client that this session will give them the calm determination to practice frequently so that they can gradually recover more fluent speech.
The induction guides the client to take slow, deep breaths and to allow themselves to simply follow along to the sound of the words without applying any conscious effort. They are assured that the part of them that dreams at night already knows how to relax and learn at an unconscious level, reinforcing new connections and mentally practicing new skills.
The suggestion that these skills will work their way into muscle memory so that the client will "just know how to do it" paves the way for this unconscious learning to begin. They are reminded that this is something their dreaming mind has always done, right from the time they were a child learning to walk.
A description of the changes that occur in the body during dream-time engenders these same changes in the client in real time as a "wave of comfort" passes through every part of the body.
Now the deeper trancework begins as the client is reminded that during dream time they can re-experience times when they have spoken "fluently and confidently." They are encouraged to get a sense of a younger self speaking with ease and confidence, then to merge with that self to experience that feeling in the present. They are prompted to notice all the sights and sounds, really bringing that conversation to life as "new areas of [the] brain begin to light up."
Now a carefully crafted story presents a secure, well organized palace as a metaphor for the mind. A major earthquake represents the stroke, preventing messengers from carrying messages in and out of the palace effectively. The empress of the palace recognizes that she must "remain calm and focused" in overseeing the construction of a new, safe, effective route for message delivery.
A series of embedded commands now embeds the key lessons from this story, promoting the formation of "a new path ... deep inside." It is acknowledged that building this new path will take time, and some getting used to, but that bit by bit sending messages "quickly and efficiently" via this route will become like second nature.
Now parallels are drawn to the process of language acquisition in childhood, proving the capacity of the brain to learn correct pronunciation and meaning and, with practice, for that to become "part of how you naturally express yourself" thanks to the deeply embedded neural connections and muscle memory. It is suggested that even at this very moment, "powerful new connections" are being formed.
This process of rewiring is represented as "a profoundly intelligent healing energy ... flowing through the brain." The client is given plenty of time to absorb this energy, and as they do, to extend kindness, compassion, and "gentle, patient encouragement" to their brain, giving it permission to respond to this energy in its own time.
Finally, the client is asked once more to "get a sense of speaking with more confidence and fluency" and then "having [already] done that." Now the script jumps forward an entire year, so that the client gets a real sense of the fluency they have gained through their "calm, determined, focused practice" throughout the year. They are prompted to recognize how far they've come and to feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with that.
