Use the Help for Dementia Hypnosis Script to Bring Relief to Clients Suffering from Cognitive Decline
Help dementia sufferers improve their condition and develop patience with their limitations
Dementia can affect everything. From brewing the morning coffee to remembering how to work a TV remote, the slow cognitive decline of dementia touches all parts of a client's life, often leading to feelings of frustration, anger, and depression.
The Help for Dementia Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to assist dementia sufferers to improve their memory, calm their frustrations, and find ways to enjoy life in spite of their disease. Its use is supported by research from the University of Liverpool which found that hypnosis can aid in slowing mental decline and increasing life enjoyment in patients with dementia.1
The script has an extended induction, which begins with progressive relaxation. As the patient unwinds and feels their facial muscles relax, they are guided to immerse themselves in a serene ocean scene that evokes all the senses. As they gaze out to the horizon, they are asked to shift their attention to their extremities and feel the looseness of their hands and feet.
Now, the client is ushered into a deeper state of relaxation through guided breathing. They are asked to "hear the distant sound of a piano playing a gentle melody" and to feel the rhythmic back-and-forth of a brass pendulum inside a grandfather clock, focusing their attention and sinking them further into trance.
With the client now fully relaxed, the trancework begins with an embedded command that imbues the client with the ability to "remember more vividly now." Through this ability, the client is guided to retrieve a memory of "a time with a smile," perhaps on vacation.
The client basks in this memory for a while before being guided towards another scene from the past, this time they one where they were with someone special. As the client pictures the memory, they are urged to let themselves feel good and enjoy this remembered connection.
Extending the theme of positive memories, the client is guided to recall a time when they heard a favorite piece of music or song. As the memory of the music floods their mind, they are invited to hear it anew and allow it to affect them the way it did the first time they heard it, rediscovering just how good this feels.
Next, the client is taken through a variety of sense memories anchored by smell, including "the smell in the air when it first starts to rain," "a favorite meal being cooked," and "the aroma of a particular perfume."
From this place of deeply positive affect, the client is primed to receive embedded commands to think more clearly. The client’s ability to "effortlessly focus" and "see things with absolute clarity" is emphasized, boosting their confidence in their abilities.
As the client feels their focus sharpening, they are invited to imagine a "brilliant golden light" being poured into them. This light of healing kindness begins to seep into their bodies, permeating their head and lighting up different areas of the brain with its radiance. The client is encouraged to picture – and feel – the tingling energy the light brings as it flows through the brain and makes it glow with new connections.
As the light continues to pour through the client’s body, bringing "healing and clarity," embedded commands endow the client with sharper focus and a stronger memory. The client is invited to picture themselves, in both the near and the more distant future, looking more focused and feeling more confident and fulfilled.
As the client is brought back to the present, it is acknowledged that there will still be times that they need to be patient with themselves, to "relax and trust" in their abilities, and to give themselves plenty of time to "ease back into this clarity." They are reassured that, as time goes by, this will become easier and easier thanks to the unwavering support of the unconscious mind, and their growing ability to calmly focus, think, and remember.
Through a slow count, the client is brought back to full alertness. All the while, they are reminded of their ability to think clearly and feel good.
