The good news is that having loads of intrusive and pre-occupying thoughts is actually a normal experience. Studies undertaken by psychologist Stanley Rachman showed that almost everyone experiences 'bad thoughts', and becomes pre-occupied with them (1). This is a universal human experience. So there is nothing fundamentally wrong with you if you have such thoughts too.

The role of emotion in getting pre-occupied with certain thoughts

The problem really comes from how much these thoughts are troubling you, rather than the fact that you are having them. How much they trouble you depends on how much significance you attach to them, and that stems from how much emotion you respond with. This is easy to say, and even to understand. But once you have got into a habit of thinking obsessively about something, how can you switch off this response?

Emotional arousal is an unconscious process - you don't choose, consciously, to feel a particular way. You just find yourself feeling like that. But then you start thinking about what you are feeling, and this in turn rouses an emotional response to your thoughts, and so a sort of spiral is set up, which just carries you away.

People can get caught up in all kinds of obsessive thoughts-ranging from worries about failure to concerns over making mistakes or offending someone. Others may experience troubling recurring ideas connected to violence, sex, or socially inappropriate behavior. These thoughts can also take the form of open-ended "what if" worries, like:

  • What if I did that?
  • What if there's something wrong with me?
  • What if I offended someone?

These thoughts often loop endlessly, making them distracting and frustrating, especially when you recognize that they aren't grounded in reality.

The Vicious Cycle of Obsessive Thoughts

What makes obsessive thoughts worse is that sufferers often worry about having these thoughts in the first place. They imagine these thoughts might reveal something terrible about them, sparking a battle to suppress or avoid them. This creates a cycle of self-doubt and internal conflict, where trying to push the thoughts away or worrying about their implications only intensifies the emotional response.

The truth is:

  • Having inappropriate or intrusive thoughts doesn't reveal any dark truth about you.
  • If it does, it's the same truth for nearly every human being on the planet.

The human brain naturally produces random, wandering thoughts, some of which are influenced by primal instincts like fear, anger, sex, or violence.

The Universality of Intrusive Thoughts

Psychologist Stanley Rachman conducted a survey of college students and found that nearly all of them had experienced intrusive thoughts. These ranged from thoughts of harming strangers or loved ones to blasphemous images or thoughts of sexual violence.

Intrusive thoughts are simply a normal part of human consciousness and not a sign of personal flaw or weakness.

Obsessive Thoughts and Emotional Significance

The difference between an everyday inappropriate thought and an obsessive one lies in how much emotion and significance you attach to it.

  • The more anxiety, frustration, or guilt you feel about a thought, the more important it seems.
  • This emotional arousal acts as a "tag" that signals to the brain that the thought is important.

As a result, the brain keeps bringing it to your attention, reinforcing the pattern.

A New Approach: Letting Go of Emotional Arousal

This session doesn't aim to suppress inappropriate thoughts because doing so creates an internal struggle, increasing emotional arousal. Trying not to think about something-like penguins wearing top hats-only makes it more persistent.
