Give Your Clients Relief with the Chronic Pain Management Hypnosis Script

Help your clients dial down the experience of pain at an unconscious level

Chronic pain, defined as pain lasting more than three months, is thought to affect around two in five adults. Using hypnosis to alleviate it can potentially have a huge impact on many people's quality of life.

The Chronic Pain Management Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help clients living with chronic pain develop the ability to tune out or dial down the experience of discomfort.

The pre-talk discusses the important role of pain in alerting us to problems in the body, but acknowledges that in the case of chronic pain, the discomfort has no useful function and serves only to diminish our quality of life. It explores some of the situations where chronic pain may be reduced, demonstrating that it is possible to change the way our brains perceive pain. Finally, it reassures the client that hypnosis allows us to do just that.

The induction guides the client to take slow, deep breaths and notice the progressive relaxation with each out-breath. It asks the client to note any sensations of discomfort, and "give [their] body the message that it's okay to relax around those sensations." The script guides the client to shift their attention around the body to sense the gradual release and loosening of all the different muscles.

Now the client is asked to get a sense of being totally immersed, focused, and absorbed in an activity to the exclusion of all else. It is suggested that the unconscious mind can "amplify this experience," building that sense of focus so that "everything settles down within."

As we launch into the story of "a [chronic pain] client I worked with," the client discovers and vicariously experiences "one of the most useful changes" that person made - to separate out her physical pain from her thoughts and emotions about that pain. By observing this change as someone else's experience, the client can absorb it with no sense of pressure to react or respond in a certain way.

The client's thoughts and emotions are described as "gliding away," leaving them feeling "lighter" and "freer" - so much so that it feels like they're "on top of a mountain." Here on the mountaintop the "winds of time" give a sense of physicality to the process of "clearing out what needs to be cleared out" and allow for those thoughts and emotions to fly far away.

Next, the story of a king "inundated with frantic messengers" serves as a metaphor for the client's pain. The king's wisest advisor tells him that the best way to quiet down the messengers is to simply acknowledge them - to let them know they are being heard, and that everything that can be done is being done. The story concludes with a sense of deep calm and respect within the "kingdom," presented in the form of embedded commands.

Now we observe an artist painting his sensations, depicting a change from something fiery and sharp to something cooler, calmer, and more distant. In observing this color change, the client's own emotions can track along the same path. Every sensation is described as communicating in a calm, quiet, respectful way so that the body can work in harmony.

Again the client is able to absorb new learnings via another person's perspective, as the artist finds that "from this new perspective... other parts of life [begin] to open up again." Embedded commands help the client to experience this for themselves - to "engage with doing what fulfils [them]" and "connect with what's useful for [them]."

It is suggested that the unconscious mind can now integrate these new perspectives, and an extended description of this process explores all the positive changes the client will enjoy as they "discover new ways... to enjoy more ease and wellbeing."

We return now to both the artist and the king, finding that the artist has completed his painting with the perfect harmony of colors, shapes, and textures, while the king is receiving less frequent, more respectful messages from his messengers as he continues to provide them with calm reassurance.

Back on the mountaintop, "the winds quiet down" as the client is encouraged to find a stillness, clarity, and calm that they can take with them into their interactions with the pain "messages" within their body. Finally, we learn how "that client" discovered a greater ease and freedom within days of "making these internal changes" as it is suggested that the client themselves can do the same.
