Misokenisa or "hatred of movement" has only recently begun to be studied by scientists. Despite its newness, initial research suggests that about one-third of people may suffer from some form of the condition, which is characterized by negative feelings brought on by repetitive motions in others.1

While the intensity of misokinesia varies from a slight annoyance to severe stress and mental anguish, it can be severely limiting to those who experience it. A brief pre-talk opens the script by linking what happens in the brain during misokinesia, an under-studied disorder, to misophonia, which has been researched extensively. It explains how hypnosis has helped millions of people with intense phobias, including misophonia, overcome their hindrances, helping to establish trust in the process and setting expectations about what kind of benefits the session can provide.

The induction begins by asking the client to recall an instance when they experience misokinesia. They are guided to notice how they felt at the time, from what they saw and how that sight translated inside of them.

Now, the client is dissociated from the experience. They are guided to observe themselves from afar. From this vantage, the client is led to picture the full scene: where they were, who they were with, what else was happening. Embedded commands anchor the feeling of calm and distant observation in their mind.

The client is led to finish watching the memory until they observe themselves having moved on from the experience. Then they are asked to let the sense memory go and settle back inside of themselves.

A short progressive relaxation and a focus on breathing are invoked to move the client into a trance state.

Now, the client is led to imagine walking along a path toward a majestic vista, where sublime beauty encourages deep tranquillity. They are encouraged to feel calmness flowing throughout their body as embedded commands press for further relaxation.

Two scenarios are laid out. In the first, a log collides with a boat carrying passengers down a river. In this situation, the passengers may notice the sound of the log running into the craft. They may even steal a quick look. But they will ultimately pay it little attention and continue to enjoy the ride.

In the second scenario, the same boat encounters a person in the water who swims up to the boat and punches its side. Their punch lands with the same amount of force as the log did when it struck the boat. This time, however, the passengers feel "all kinds of emotions" even though the encounter does not threaten their journey.

The client is led to understand how reactions to movement are affected by how our brain categorizes and processes them. They are guided to understand how they can connect with or detach from these movements.

The client is reassured that even though they can now tone down their discomfort, they are still allowed to have preferences in every situation.

Now, they are urged to re-imagine past scenarios that triggered their misokinesia from their new, calmer vantage point. This practice cements the positive behavior pattern in their minds.

The client is once again asked to picture themselves in the future, having lived a full year since the session. In this scenario, the client has fully incorporated the lessons and is able to calmly detach from issues that would have previously triggered negative feelings. Embedded commands are used to reinforce how good they feel about the progress.
