Words that move
Words are very powerful things. They can move us to tears, rouse us to anger - they can sell us something we didn't know we needed. Words have to power to heal and help us grow stronger. They can lead our minds to special places where even the most strongly held negative views, phobias or darkest fears can be unwrapped and resolved. Okay, so let's take a closer look at just a couple of the powerful tools in the hypnotic language tool chest - 'truisms' and 'adjunctive suggestions'. A truism is the simplest form of suggestion - a simple statement of fact about a behavior experienced so often that it cannot be denied. For example: 'You already know how to experience pleasant sensations like the warmth of the sun on your skin'. Or: 'We know when you're asleep your unconscious can dream.' Truisms help build rapport. An adjunctive suggestion is a suggestion you attach to a truism, which makes it more likely to be accepted by the intelligent brain (the part of our brain that's working away seeking out connections and logic). Here's an example: 'You can sit in that chair and begin to relax'. The brain accepts as true that the chair can indeed be sat in and then goes on to accept the idea of relaxation happening. If you make it a compound suggestion, so much the better. Here's one: 'You don't know what's going to happen, so you can sit there and wonder and do nothing except notice how those eyelids can begin to close all by themselves'. As you begin to recognize these language patterns you will begin to pick them out all over the place. You can also practice using them, which is a great way of really understanding the power of hypnosis. You may also want to check out our scripts section. Scripts are a great way of 'seeing" and 'reading' these patterns and noticing how they work together and build on each other.
