Improving leadership skills

I'm a leader in a large team of 13 people. There are several dominant people, one 25 years older than me (previous leader who stepped down due to il health) who has a strong pull over others to follow what she has done in the past and ignore new directions from me.

I've not drawn firm boundaries in the past for several reasons but would like to present myself better to gain respect and to be naturally followed by others. I'm all for ethical workplace behaviours to gain power, respect, trust and authority, all to do my job to a high standard and pull the team together towards a common goal.
