How not to become angry with a mother

Anonymous's picture

Someone I know would like help in controlling her aggression towards her mother. She says her mother lacks empathy, is "stone cold", has narcissistic tendencies, and cannot talk to her about emotions or be pleasant or even show interest in things that are important to her daughter and grandchild.

Apparently she never asks after them or shows any love. It's as if the mother has "closed herself off" and this frustrated the daughter to the point of her getting very angry with her mother. She tries to be tolerant and make excuses for her mother being like she is (born in 1942) but feels like she's losing a battle.

She would like "to get through" to her mother and find a way for them to connect, but every time she tries, she ends up being blocked and it upsets her so that she loses her composure and raises her voice which keeps the cycle going. Any ideas where we could start?

Hi there,

Thank you for your question.

Below you'll find links to a few sessions that should help your friend. She may also like to have a look at the Dealing with Difficult People category, in particular 'The Narcissist'.
