Depressed wife, unemployed son, and procrastination: please help!

Anonymous's picture

I am a 63-year-old IT professional. I am currently working as a contractor. My current challenges are:

1. I have a mildly depressed wife (same age as me) who constantly blames most of her unhappiness on me. Initially, I took it very hard. After using your 'Don't Take It Personally', I am much better. It is also why I like you so much.

2. I have an unemployed son. I helped him to work in my IT field. He worked in it for three years. He was recently laid off. One issue is that acting is his real passion. So he is trying to pursue this dual career: one career to pay his bills and one he enjoys. Being a father, I am unhappy that he did not land on a steady career, hence broke off with girlfriend, etc. This thought haunts me for years.

3. I am a procrastinator. I know you have media for this.

That's it for now. I am sure I can think of more shortcomings I want to work on.

For the time being, please suggest a package for the above. ASAP!

I thank you for your help.

Hi there,

Thank you for your question. It's clear that you care and worry about your family, so I hope I can provide some useful suggestions for you. :)

1. If you haven't already, you might ask your wife to have a look at our Natural Depression Recovery Program, which currently offers free access to the introduction and first session. For you, we have a program to help spouses of depressed wives (linked below).

2. I know parents will always worry about their children, even after they're adults, but if that worry is impacting your own wellbeing, that's not helpful to anyone, so I've linked to our program for that. One thing to keep in mind is that these days, even traditionally 'steady careers' are no longer as steady as they used to be, for reasons that are often out of the workers' control. It can be very frustrating and I do hope your son lands on his feet in work he enjoys. Many people are finding 'untraditional' ways to make livings; for instance, thanks to the Internet, I work from the States for this UK-based company! :)

3. We have several programs on procrastination, so I've selected a couple below for you.

I hope this helps!

Best wishes,

Rebekah
