Bully for a brother

Anonymous's picture

My younger brother has most of the control of our elderly mother's considerable assets and is manuevering to gain total control. I will explore my legal options, but believe there isn't much I can do. He refuses to assist with her needs and attempts to bully me to do as he wishes. He is highly critical of me, wants all the power and recognition, doesn't share critical information, and doesn't acknowledge or value the substantial number of hours I've spent over the years caring for her. We have only one other sibling: a severely mentally handicapped brother for whom I will become guardian.

What can I do to deal with my frustration? Incidentally, he treats most people this way. He is a very angry person.

My overwhelming feeling is that I am under attack. Not physically, but under enough stress emotionally that I always have my defenses up in anticipation of an attack. I'm expecting it from friends (they never do), strangers (that rarely happens), and of course relatives and always feel the need to be on guard.

Hi there,

Thank you for your message. I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through right now.

'The Angry Bully' and/or 'The Control Freak' should assist you with remaining calm while dealing with your brother and help you stop expecting attacks around every corner.

I also recommend that you listen to 'Stress Relief for Carers', since you have taken on so much of the responsibility of caring for your mother and, in the future, your other brother. You need to take care of yourself before you can properly care for others. :)

I hope this helps!

Best wishes,

Rebekah
