Would like to learn discretion and to stop talking about my personal problems at work

Anonymous's picture

I have recently started a new job at the same time as going through various personal crises such as domestic violence, losing my home, and having a very ill child. I am very alone in a new country and gradually trying to build up a support system outside of work. I have purchased downloads dealing with those three issues and now have a therapist.

My issue is that although I don't usually bring up my personal life at work, my colleagues all know about it because as soon as they ask me how I am, the floodgates open and I can't stop myself telling them everything. They are colleagues rather than friends, and I always regret telling them such personal things as soon as the words leave my mouth. It leaves me mortified and embarrassed and wondering if they will gossip about it. I don't want to be known as a drama queen or judged for my messed up life.

I am working on the 'Be More Professional' download but want to learn to be discreet and to keep my personal life out of the workplace.

Thank you!

Hi there,

Thank you for your question. I'm very sorry to hear you've been going through such a rough time lately.

One of the first downloads I would recommend to you is 'Meet Your Human Needs', because it sounds like you may be trying to meet your needs for attention and connection in a less than helpful way at work.

Some other suggestions are listed below, I hope they help!

Best wishes,

Rebekah
