Need a solution to being too much of a nice guy at work

I've done pretty well in my career so far and I am on the cusp of stepping up again. I've been told by more than one of my big bosses that everyone knows I'm a nice guy but that it will work against me and I need to find an edge...not really sure what this means, so was hoping the community might be able to help me out with some suggestions.

We have a download to help you stop being too nice (linked below). But how you are too nice is perhaps the question. Do you need to be more assertive? More proactive? Or something else?
