Heal Moral Injury and Move Forward with Your Life
Forgive yourself for past transgressions and take action to build a more positive future
Have you said or done something that seems simply unforgivable?
Are you struggling under the weight of the guilt and shame?
Moral injury is injury to a person's moral conscience as a result of a perceived moral transgression. The fact that you're reading this means you've probably experienced this yourself, in which case you'll be all too familiar with the profound guilt and shame that goes along with it.
When you're crushed under the weight of guilt it can be hard to find joy in life. You may even deliberately fight joy because you don't think you deserve it. Maybe you isolate yourself from others because it feels like nobody can ever really understand what you're going through. There are countless ways we punish ourselves for what we see as unforgivable actions.
But consider this: the very fact that you feel so much regret over what you did shows that your moral compass has survived intact. What you did, reprehensible as it may be, is not all you are. There are still many parts of you that are thoroughly good. And you can take this as an opportunity to connect more deeply with those parts of yourself in order to create a more positive future for yourself and others.
We all deserve forgiveness. A chance to learn and grow from our mistakes. To serve our time and move forward. We need to forgive, because we humans are fallible and moral transgressions are unavoidable. Just ask Stanley Milgram.
What we can learn from the Stanley Milgram experiment
In the 1960s, Stanley Milgram conducted an experiment in which American college students were instructed to give electric shocks to another person over and over, at higher and higher voltages, until they appeared to die (don't worry, they were just acting!). While most of us would like to think we would simply refuse to obey such orders, the reality was somewhat different. Two-thirds of the students continued to follow orders, even as the victim pled for them to stop, right up until the highest voltage.
So what should we draw from this? Are people just inherently bad?
Of course not. Rather, this proves that humans are complex beings, with complex drives and motivations. Good people can do bad things in certain circumstances - things they would never expect to be capable of. This is part of being human, and it does not make a person inherently bad.
