Deal with the Backstabber in Your Life
Overcome the emotional pain of backstabbing and develop strategies to effectively deal with the situation
Has somebody stabbed you in the back?
Are you having trouble dealing with the betrayal?
When someone undermines you or paints you in a negative light, it genuinely hurts - it might even feel as if the wound is never going to heal. And of course, even as you struggle to cope with the pain, you also have to grapple with the challenge of how to respond.
Backstabbing behavior generally stems from a desire to gain in social or professional status, though there is a smaller subset of people who simply enjoy gossiping or hurting others. Backstabbers are often highly adept at the art of deception, and good at covering their tracks. But even though logically you know it's not your fault, it can still be hard not to feel stupid for not having seen it coming.
So what can you do to get back on your feet after being backstabbed?
Practical strategies to deal with backstabbing
If you learned about a betrayal from another person, it's worth remembering that we can't always take everything we're told at face value. The situation may have been remembered wrongly, misinterpreted, or taken out of context - or the person may have an ulterior motive. So consider whether it might be worth confronting the alleged backstabber, or someone close to the situation, to let them tell their side of the story.
If the person truly has betrayed you, hold onto the knowledge that the picture they painted of you doesn't reflect reality. You are still the same person, with the same strengths, and you will get through this.
Have the calm, honest conversations you need to have with your friends, colleagues, or superiors to make sure they know the truth. Don't make this about discrediting or attacking the backstabber, as tempting as it may be! Keep the focus on setting the story straight about yourself.
Of course, all this is easier said than done. When you've been deeply hurt, emotions can cloud your judgement and impair your decision making. That's why it's important to work on healing your negative emotions at a deeper level.
