Do You Need Help for a Migraine?

Did you know that one out of every 10 people need help for a migraine? Many of these people don't even realize their headaches are actually migraines. If you find that your headache is interfering with your daily life, you may need help with a migraine.

Experts suggest that migraines are caused, at least in part, by changes in a chemical in your brain called serotonin. When serotonin is high, blood vessels constrict, and when they are low, blood vessels dilate, or swell. This swelling causes pain. This pain can be so intense that it affects your function in daily life. Some of the symptoms include, pain on one side of the head, nausea, vomiting, blurred visions, stiff neck, and lightheadedness.

There are two types of migraines, common and classic. Classic migraines start with some kind of warning sign, known as an aura, which involves a change in vision, a burning sensation, or muscle weakness. Common migraines do not start with an aura. They start slowly, last longer, and interfere more with daily life.

There are many ways to help a migraine. Over the counter medications are helpful in reducing pain, but they can cause rebound headaches, which occur when you stop taking the medication. There are also some pharmaceuticals to help a migraine. For those who do not like taking drugs, alternative treatments can be helpful in reducing or eliminating pain. Such treatments include acupuncture, aromatherapy, and hypnosis.
