How to deal with parental expectations
Use hypnosis to free yourself to be yourself
Are you still bound by what you think your parents expect of you?
Does it sometimes feel like you're living the life they want rather than the one you want?
It's natural for parents to have hopes and dreams for their children, and to want their children to be 'successful' in life. But there are countless ways to be 'successful', and just as many different ways to bring up children. So for any individual set of parents, deciding what 'successful' means, and how to raise your children to be 'successful', is a chancy business. There is no perfect recipe (or we'd all be following it).
From your point of view, chance plays another decisive role. You don't get to choose who your parents or caregivers are. You get what you get, and they do what they do, and if you've made it to independent adulthood, you can at least say they did a 'basically good enough' job of raising you.
But there's more to it than that.
The emotional bonds behind parental expectations
Firstly, children, for important survival reasons, get very strongly attached to the parental figures in their lives. Parents can be equally attached to children, although this is not guaranteed. These emotional bonds are often heavy with obligation. Sometimes parents are quite direct about this: "Look what I've done for you!" Sometimes you can only tell you've not lived up to the obligation by the look on their face.
Secondly, a child spends a long time in a position of dependence on their parents. To a small child, a parent is a god-like figure, with all the power in the world. This is inescapable, but becoming fully adult is partly about recognizing that your parents are not gods after all, just ordinary fallible human beings, just like you. And they have no special right to dictate how you should think or live.
Of course, parents who are used to being in a god-like position can find it painful when their children think or act differently from them. They can get angry and hurt, and tell you that you don't love them, because if you did you wouldn't behave like this. This is what makes it so challenging to strike out on your own path. You don't want to hurt them - but you don't want to be held back forever by them either.
So how can you best handle this situation?
