To compete well, you don't need to be too relaxed. Rather a certain balance of excitement will give you absolute readiness, focus and intense building energy.

Think of a tiger about to pounce. It doesn't feel nerves although it can't be said to be relaxed either. It has what we might call supreme attentiveness and absolute focus. This focus and energy is also seen in the world's top sprinters just before a race and is a force which is collected, understood and properly focussed by all the sporting greats from boxers to gymnasts.
