Get yourself walking more - you know you want to!
'Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it.' Soren Kierkegaard, Danish philosopher
So the time has come. You've been talking yourself into it for a while. Must do more exercise. Must watch my weight. Must watch my blood-pressure. Must get fit. Must fix that flab. Must stop feeling so dull and lethargic. Must WALK MORE!
Why is it so hard?
Changing can feel hard
Even when you've lined up all the reasons why you should do something, like walking more, and you firmly believe that it is the right thing for you to do and that it is going to do you good, it can feel difficult to motivate yourself to get going. Let's look at what's holding you back.
The real blocks to walking as much as you want
Two things militate against your plan. One is that natural human spirit of rebellion that kicks in whenever you hear (or think) the words 'should' or 'must'. The other is the accumulated inertia exerted by your existing patterns of behaviour (which currently - but not for much longer! - don't include enough walking). If you want to make walking play a bigger part in your life, we need to find a way to win through these blocks.
How rebellion can help you get walking more
Rebellion is a vital attribute that we all need in life if we are not to become mere obedient robots, so you don't want to quash it. Quite the opposite! You want to fire up that spirit of rebellion and direct it to where it's really needed. Right now, it's the lack of exercise that's destroying you and turning you into a conformist. Walking more will be a fine rebellion indeed against the general pressure to turn into a blob.
Overcoming inertia to walk more
When it comes to breaking through inertia, it's a matter of understanding how habits are formed - and changed. We are all creatures of habit (it makes life easier), but you weren't born with habits. Each and every one had to be acquired, and practised until it was established. Some habits take years to acquire, like brushing your teeth (remember those arguments?). Others only a few weeks or months.
Does this mean you will have to walk more for months before it becomes a habit?
No. That's right.
Using hypnosis to build a new habit of walking more
You can use the power of your unconscious mind to speed up the development of a habit that you want to have. Using hypnosis, you can warp time to allow yourself to experience many repetitions of a desired behaviour. It has been established that the brain does not distinguish between actual and imagined events, and will respond as if you had already actually carried out that behaviour that often.
What hypnotic change means for your plan to walk more
What this means is that your brain and your body will behave as if you already are in the habit of walking out more every day. And, in turn, this means that actually getting up and going out for a walk, and just generally walking more, feels normal and natural to you, part of your everyday life.
Walk more is a great session to use to test this out for yourself. It will relax your mind, and get you through that rebellious switch easily and effortlessly. When you listen to Walk more, you'll find yourself carried away on many walking expeditions, minor and major, and enjoying every minute. You'll be delighted with how easy and natural it is to make this change and begin to walk more.
