Flying without fear is an unknown quality for many people. Since September 11, it is
common to hear people talk of having a fear of flying. This is only natural with all
the terrorist attacks that have taken place. For many others, flying without fear is
not possible because they have a phobia called aviophobia, a fear of flying phobia.
Flying without fear involves realizing that although accidents have occurred during
flights, nothing is happening to you right now as you sit in the seat of the airplane.
Others think constantly about what might happen and these thoughts can bring on
severe panic attacks. The fear of flying has a basis in a fear of heights, enclosed
spaces and not being in control.
Those who are unable to experience flying without fear complain of two different
types of symptoms - psychological and physiological. The psychological symptoms
include having difficulty breathing, experiencing chest pains, having muscle spasms,
experiencing stomach problems and excessive sweating. The physiological symptoms
include forgetfulness, poor judgement, and narrow perceptions. These symptoms do not
necessarily mean that you have a phobia about flying. Many people experience
discomfort while in a plane, such as sinus pain or inner ear pain as well as joint
and muscle pain. If you feel comfortable and are not having difficulty, you know that
these symptoms will pass.
If you experience any of these symptoms while flying, you may be suffering from a
fear of flying. You do not have to suffer, but you can get help. Many psychologists
can coach you through a flying experience and many people have obtained help through
hypnosis. There is no need for suffering and
by getting help you could be flying
without fear.
