Arachnophobia is the unreasonable fear of spiders. Many people dislike spiders or are
afraid of them, but it isn't something they worry about constantly. Arachnaphobics
allow their fear of spiders to control their lives. Where they live and work and what
activities they participate in can all be affected by their phobia. They also suffer
from real physical symptoms at the sight or sometimes even the thought of spiders.
These symptoms can include dizziness, nausea, sweating, and accelerated pulse and
breathing.
People who suffer from arachnophobia may have had an unpleasant experience with
spiders in their childhood. They may not even consciously remember what that
experience was, but it was so strong that it stuck in their subconscious mind.
There are two types of arachnaphobics: monitors and blunters. Blunters will do
everything in their power to block out the sight of a spider. If a spider is in the
room, they may ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist, even though they are very
fearful. Monitors may enter a room and search it completely to make sure there are no
spiders in it. He will know at all times where the spider is and will track, or
monitor, its position.
