Agoraphobia medication is available for those who suffer from anxiety disorders. There are many kinds of anxiety
disorders and help is available in the form of psychological counseling and medication. There are two common types
of agoraphobia medications that are prescribed by doctors. These are SSRI's and Anti-Anxiety medications called
Benzodiazepines.
SSRI is an acronym for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. This type of medication includes the well-known
Zoloft and Paxil. Medications originally intended to treat depression have been found to be effective in treating
panic disorders because they affect the level of serotonin - a chemical in the brain believed to be linked to
anxiety disorders. These agoraphobia medications have side effects which vary from person to person and may include
dry mouth, nausea, sexual side effects, decreased appetite and more.
Benzodiazepines are medications that quickly relieve the symptoms for many suffered of anxiety disorders. The most
common side effect is sleepiness, but this usually decreases within the first week. However, until it does a person
taking this medication cannot drive a car or work in any dangerous areas. One common form of this agoraphobia
medication is Xanax.
The least intrusive help for those who suffer from agoraphobia is hypnosis. This treatment helps the person to
learn calming and relaxation techniques that provide relief from the anxiety. There are no medications to take or
no side effects to worry about. Through hypnosis a person is encouraged to concentrate on what causes the anxiety
and then look for ways to eliminate or reduce these causes. It provides
maximum
relief without having to take any agoraphobia medications.
