Help Your Child Client Overcome Social Anxiety with the Selective Mutism for Kids Hypnosis Script

Let this gentle hypnotic story bring a sense of safety and security to the child's experience of speaking in social situations

Selective mutism is a childhood anxiety disorder characterized by an inability to speak or communicate effectively in particular social settings.

The Selective Mutism for Kids Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help kids feel more safe and secure about speaking in social situations.

The pre-talk simply explains to the child that they are about to hear a "magic story" that will give them a "very special dream" in which they will learn "secrets" that will help them.

We then launch straight into the induction, where the child is guided to breathe slowly and let their body become heavy, as if they were "pretending to be fast asleep." We build on this idea with an exploration of how a person sounds and looks when they are fast asleep, encouraging the child to notice and embody every aspect of that deep slumber.

Now the child is asked to "imagine drifting through space and time" into that promised magic dream. They are introduced to a boy called Alfie, who has been given a trumpet by his grandmother and absolutely loves playing it. The child follows Alfie as he gets good at playing, and comes to love trumpeting loudly and proudly just like an elephant.

One day, after Alfie puts on an especially good performance for his parents, they ask the neighbors to come over and hear it. The child can immediately identify with Alfie, as he feels "a teensy bit scared" about this, but doesn't know why. When Alfie puts his lips to the trumpet but no sound comes out - a clear parallel to selective mutism - the child understands exactly how he feels.

The story continues with Alfie trying to understand what went wrong as he discovers that he can still trumpet perfectly well after the neighbors have left. We linger on this point, with an embedded command encouraging the child to recognize and appreciate that they do have the ability to "trumpet loudly and proudly."

When Alfie tries to play for his friends, once again he finds himself unable to produce a sound. As he realizes his trumpet only works for his parents and his grandmother, he wonders whether perhaps his trumpet is "just scared." When he brings this idea to his grandmother, she tells him about how she too used to be unable to sing in front of other people, further normalizing the child's experience of selective mutism.

The grandmother goes on to describe how a "very wise old man" had explained to her that her voice was "just a bit worried." He had cast a spell that magically enabled her voice and throat to feel completely safe and relaxed wherever she went. The child is able to follow along with and reap the benefits of that spell, but the sense of separation between the child and the grandmother ensures they do not feel pressured into that experience.

The grandmother explains that from that moment forth, she could sing for anyone, and her "love for music grew and grew," a suggestion of the pleasure and satisfaction the child will gain as they overcome their anxiety. She offers to use the same magic on Alfie's trumpet, and he happily accepts. The spell uses language focused on feeling safe and proud, but also offers "all the time you need" to get there.

Now a series of embedded commands encourages the child to feel this magic working within them, too - to start feeling safe as they freely and proudly speak wherever they are and whoever they are with, and to notice how very good that feels.

We return to Alfie once more, observing the magic within him as he plays again for his family. When he notices the neighbours are there too and realizes he is still just as free to play, he is filled with pride and starts playing even louder! Briefly we look at what this transformation means for Alfie's future - how he continues to play as he grows up, learning new songs and even starting to play in a band.

In closing, the child is assured that "the magic of this story will continue to work" within them more and more every day.
