Help Your Client Read the Room with the Stop Oversharing Hypnosis Script

Develop your client's understanding of context and ability to adapt their communication accordingly

People naturally vary in how openly they share details of their personal life, but it's important to be aware of the implicit rules by which people typically like to get to know one another. Oversharing can make people uncomfortable and cause damage to relationships.

The Stop Oversharing Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help clients improve their ability to notice the context of a social situation and use that to guide an appropriate communication style.

The pre-talk acknowledges that there is no single rule that governs how much personal information a person should share, but suggests that there are implicit social rules that govern how people get to know one another, and we can make people feel uncomfortable when we violate them. It explores some of the reasons the client might do this, helping them feel understood. Finally, it assures the client that this session will help them naturally sense context and respond appropriately, and enjoy better-quality relationships as a result.

As the induction begins, the client is encouraged to sense a deepening relaxation with every out-breath. It is suggested that as they relax, they will become more open to learning and integrating new patterns of behavior. They are prompted to recognize that this is a natural process, that already they have outgrown patterns of behavior from when they were younger. The expectation of "powerful, positive changes" is set as the client is encouraged to "relax even deeper still."

The client is reassured that their unconscious mind knows what to do here, so they need not try to stop their conscious mind from wandering and drifting. With this in mind, they are guided to notice the softening and relaxation in various muscles with gentle, permissive language that lets them move at their own pace.

The client is now guided into a beautiful landscape under a clear blue sky. The senses are evoked as they are encouraged to notice the warmth of the sunlight and to take in the view before them. It is suggested that in this beautiful, expansive setting they can have the space to reflect on "fresh possibilities." All the while they are gently encouraged to experience the sense of calm and relaxation deepening with every step, permeating every part of the body.

The deeper trancework begins with an acknowledgement of the fact that different cultures have different implicit social rules, and that these rules must be learned and mastered in order to connect and communicate appropriately with people in those cultures. This creates a clear parallel to the need for this same understanding of social norms in one's own culture. Embedded commands help the client absorb and integrate this understanding.

Now the client is gently pushed to recognize that they do already understand these rules - they can distinguish between conversations that put others at ease, and those that stir unease. The latter is likened to when a traveller forgets the social norms of where they are, as it is suggested that a traveller must "make it important enough" to remind themselves of those norms repeatedly, until communicating with people from that culture becomes natural.

This idea is unpacked further with a series of embedded commands that tap into the client's innate understanding of context and deepen their skill in noticing that context and adapting their communication style accordingly. To reinforce this, the client is guided to re-experience times when they've already done this, with further commands increasing their mastery of all the different facets of this skill.

The trancework ends with an exploration of the future. It considers how, as we get closer to people over time, it can be appropriate to open up more, but that this still always entails a careful consideration of context. It paints the forgetting of context and "trampling over boundaries" as an old, outdated "childhood pattern" of behavior that now feels like no more than a "distant memory."

Finally, the client is asked to get a sense of their future self speaking calmly, having already internalized this "deep unconscious skill" so that their communication is "mutually respectful, friendly, easy," and "flowing."
