The shyness cure most often given by people who have never suffered from shyness is
to get out and mix with other people, to just get over it. But to the shy person,
this advice is like telling someone to learn to swim by jumping into the deep end
of the pool. It's a terrifying idea. You can find the shyness cure that is right
for you.
Systematic desensitization is a shyness cure that has worked for many people. This
method involves figuring out what you're afraid of, breaking it down into small
steps, and doing one step at a time, from easiest to hardest. Make a list of
situations in which you feel shy, starting from the least scary to the most. Take
the first situation on your list and break it down into small goals that will help
you work on your shyness. Every day for a couple of weeks, do the first step on your
list, and then do the same for the next step.
Visualization is another good shyness cure. With this method, you need to pick a
time and place where you wont be interrupted. Sit with your eyes closed and picture
a situation that has caused you shyness in the past. Go over the scene completely in
your mind and note how you felt and what was said. Now visualize the scene again,
but this time, imagine yourself feeling confident and saying the things you wished
you would have said the first time. Use this method 20-30 minutes a day to see
results.
