Everyone needs to be assertive. Some people are born with the ability, while others have to learn
it. It's important to be able to stand up for yourself and be able to ask for help when you need
it. You owe it to yourself, and it can make your life a lot easier. Here are some tips to help
you be more assertive.
In order to be assertive, you have to belief that it's ok to do so. You have to be able to give
yourself permission to be angry and to express that anger appropriately, to ask for help, and to
say no to others when you feel you're being taken and advantage of. This can be the hardest part
of learning to be assertive, but you have to realize that you're worth it.
You also have to learn assertive language and use it clearly. When talking to people, look them
in the eye and use I words, such as I feel or I want. Don't forget to be empathetic to the other
person; you want to be assertive, not aggressive. You can use words like this: I understand
you've been busy, but I need you to help me. You may have to escalate your assertiveness if
the person doesn't respond the first time. You can say, for example: If you don't finish this
job, I will be forced to take action, and follow up by explaining exactly what that action
will be. With practice, being assertive will become much easier until it feels natural.
