Everyone has experienced jealousy at one time or another. Some sources say anywhere between 20% and 30%
of all murders involve jealousy. While some people think jealousy and envy are the same, there is a
distinction between the two. Jealousy occurs when something is taken away from you, or there is a threat
that something will be taken away. You feel envy when you don't measure up to someone else in some way,
either personally, professionally, or through your possessions.
There are five stages of jealousy. The first is a perceived threat. You see signs of trouble where there
really are none. If your perceived competition is attractive, you feel even more jealous. If you've had
an affair yourself, you will also probably be even more jealous.
In the second stage of jealousy, you assess the threat against you. You lie awake at night worrying
about what's going on and torturing yourself with jealousy fantasies.
Stage three involves emotional reactions, perhaps clinging or raging. Stage four is where you decide
how you are going to cope, either get out of the relationship or save it. And the fifth stage of
jealousy involves the outcome, which is how the episode ends.
