There are very few smokers in this world who don't want to stop smoking. Most people
hate their filthy, expensive habit. They long to be free of the compulsion that
drives them out of movie theaters, restaurants, and churches. They hate counting the
minutes until they can light up again. They would like to wake up in the morning just
once without that hacking cough. But it's so hard to stop smoking, so here are a few
ideas that just might make it a little easier.
Watch your language. The idea of quitting or stopping is so negative. You are going
to stop smoking. You are going to liberate yourself, achieve a goal. You are choosing
not to smoke. If you use positive words to describe your actions, you will feel and
think more positive about what you are doing. You won't be depriving yourself of
nicotine; you will be accomplishing another day of being smoke free. It's a subtle,
but very powerful distinction.
Light fires. You are so used to using lighters and matches, and you shouldn't deprive
yourself of something that has become a habit. That will just make it harder to stop
smoking. Instead use your lighter and matches to light beautiful scented candles and
incense. Fill your home with a whole different kind of smoke, something far more
pleasant and soothing. Put a new candle in your favorite ashtray and light it
whenever you feel like smoking. It won't replace the feeling of smoking, but it might
make it easier to bear.
Run from the righteous. There are some people in this world who claim that they one
day laid down their cigarettes and never even thought of them again. They will
delight in telling you how easy it was for them to stop smoking and how weak you are
for suffering. Do not listen to these people. Run away from them for they will only
make your life more miserable. Find people to commiserate with and you will feel much
better.
