Control freaks, in my experience, tend to know they are control freaks. But are they controlling enough in the right way? By that I mean, are they motivated to control, and do something about, themselves being too controlling?

Control freaks tend to lose perspective and miss out on opportunities to feel pleased. ‘If something isn’t perfect, then it’s a complete failure!’ The trouble is that nothing is ever really perfect enough. The control freak tends to constantly feel let down, disappointed by themselves and others. No wonder being a control freak is depressing!

Relationships (both personal and professional) tend to be damaged as control freaks bully others (and themselves) even if that was not their intention. As a result, projects can actually get de-railed by the control freak’s morale-lowering influence.

Control freaks may want to control absolutely everything from what others think and say to exactly what and how much they eat. Everything has to be pinned down. All tyrants are control freaks. They find it hard to delegate or give others credit and often feel as though they might as well do everything themselves just to make sure it’s ‘done right’. And even though they may be highly competent, the people around them can feel offended and affronted, as if they’ve been treated like idiots.

It’s a wonderful thing to have high standards but it’s also wonderful to be flexible and adaptable, to have perspective, humour and humanity.

Perfectionism is an imperfect strategy for life.
