Being able to say sorry is a vital human relationship skill. I recall, as you may too, being forced to say sorry as a child when I didn’t really feel I had anything to apologize for. But some adults still feel this reluctance even when they know they are in the wrong. Or they feel that saying sorry is an admission of weakness of some kind. But of course being able to say you’re sorry on occasion actually shows strength of character, the ability to rise above a situation and see it objectively, and to consider the bigger picture. And talking of the bigger picture, being able to say you’re sorry can save your marriage, friendships and work life integrity – and maybe even earn you more money.

Say sorry and earn more money?

Saying sorry is important when it’s the right thing to do for its own sake. But it also seems to confer ‘side benefits’.

A study of over seven and a half thousand American adults, carried out by Zogby International pollsters, found some astonishing connections between the willingness to say sorry and success in life. People who earn over a hundred thousand dollars a year are almost twice as likely to apologize after an argument with their partner as those earning under twenty-five thousand dollars. Of course, it could be that people who can say sorry have the emotional intelligence (which has been shown to be more important than IQ for career success) to be more successful and so earn more money.

Long term singles more likely to find saying sorry difficult

And single or divorced people were half as likely to apologize in an argument as married people. So learning to say sorry more could significantly improve your relationships and your career! People who were able to say sorry (even when they only felt partially to blame) were twice as likely to be married.

Of course, we all need to stick up for ourselves sometimes, but have you ever noticed how some people never seem to be able to admit to making mistakes? After a time these people become impossible to deal with.
