Why is it that the Italians and the French look so well groomed? And so many people I see day-to-day (often even including myself, like a startled scarecrow in a shop window) look, well, as if someone has thrown a pile of un-pressed clothes in their general direction?
Clothes and grooming may be superficial: ‘It’s what’s inside that counts!’ but how we appear is surely a way of communicating just as much as words and gestures. Good grooming sends the message that we are ordered, stylish and individual – and people will often assume that we exercise these attributes beyond the sartorial on matters more weighty. And in these times of economic uncertainty, it seems workers are dressing better to impress. (1) But dressing well takes motivation, thought and time and the benefits go further than just sending positive messages to others.
Better personal grooming: a real tonic
When we feel down and despondent we often lose interest in personal appearance and grooming. But reclaiming pride in our appearance is a great way of pulling ourselves out of feeling bad and setting us back on a more positive course. It’s a chicken or egg situation. What comes first? Feeling better, or taking more care of one’s appearance? Of course (unlike the egg conundrum), it can be either way. Getting motivated to groom better can make you feel better in all kinds of other ways. The ripple effects of better grooming can go far and deep. (1) Research by fashion forum The Rag Trader has found that four out of five office workers believe the way they dress has affected their work. More than half (54%) thought dressing smartly helped them to perform better in the office. Two-thirds felt more ‘in control’ at work if they were dressed smartly, and 61% thought it gained them more respect from colleagues. Cliff Burgess, business development manager at shirtmakers TM Lewin, said: “The City is now waking up to the fact that it has to look and work smarter than ever.”
My personal chicken/egg when it came to appearance has to do with weight loss. I once heard an argument that clothiers shouldn’t offer plus-size garments for teens because “it wouldn’t give them any incentive to lose weight.” (When I was a teen, my wardrobe was monopolized by jeans and baggy t-shirts.)
However, it wasn’t until I found a decent plus-size store that offered stylish, tailored/fitted clothing in larger sizes that I started to realize that I *could* still look good despite my size. Once I started feeling better about how I looked, I wanted to look even better – I found the motivation to start losing weight and be healthier.
