Hives, sometimes known as Urticaria, causes an unpleasant itchy rash and can hang around long after the ‘activating agent’ or trigger has done its evil work. Hives can take different forms, though. Sometimes they’re the result of a specific allergy, sometimes there’s no known trigger. In some people the rash lasts a matter of minutes, in others it can last weeks, months and even years. (1) A famous study in Japan in 1962 by Ikemi and Nakagawa found that people who were hypnotised to believe that an ordinary leaf was poison ivy would produce a rash when it was touched to their skin. They also found the opposite, that a person hypnotised to believe a poison ivy leaf was an ordinary leaf would produce no response when it was laid on their skin.
