We often assume the moods and emotions we feel are caused by things other than their real causes. Or sometimes we feel that perhaps they have ‘no cause’. But a key factor in day to day life determining how we feel is ‘conditioning though association’, otherwise known as ‘pattern matching’ or ‘anchoring’. What do I mean by this?

Well, if I sit down at my desk enough times to start work, at a time of day when I naturally feel more tired, then this repetition of experience will begin to build an automatic anchor linking ‘sitting down to work’ and ‘feeling tired and unmotivated’. My unconscious mind is starting to associate my desk with feeling tired.

Pretty soon, I will find that I feel tired when I sit down to work at any time.

Similarly, if I go through a phase of not wanting to go into the office because of a difficult co-worker, pretty soon the act of going into the office can start to automatically make me feel anxious – even if that co-worker no longer works there.

Creating happy anchors

Becoming happier isn’t about lots of wonderful big happy things happening to you. It’s more about really enjoying the little things that many take for granted, and making sure you build the anchors that set off those good feelings. The new hypnosis session works to trigger automatic positive feelings with everyday anchors such as getting up in the morning, starting work and so forth.

Our emotional ebbs and flows have a lot to do with these unseen subconscious mood triggers – so it’s good to know we can set them ourselves!
