When someone ends a friendship with you, without explaining why, it can be very painful.

I have worked with quite a few people who have been devastated when a good and long-time friend stops returning their calls, or seeing or speaking to them. I had a client recently whose ‘best friend’ stopped seeing her and didn’t even invite her to her birthday party. This client told me how much she was torn apart by the uncertainty about why. She kept asking herself what she’d done to deserve this. In fact for some losing a friend can feel just as devastating (even more sometimes) than losing a romantic partner. Why would this be?

When friendship ends: The end of an era

Close and enduring friendships can seem like they are forever. So when they do end the shock can be tremendous. The ‘given’ that at least this friendship was stable and permanent, secure and comfortable, is suddenly shattered. And worst of all, sometimes we just don’t know why our friend has stopped contacting us.

Painful things that remain unexplained can be so much harder. What did I say? Why now? What’s changed? And if the former friend is unclear or cuts off all contact, living without answers can feel like agony.
